Jonkowo

The village of Jonkowo is situated near Olsztyn. It was established under the Kulm Law in the early 14th century. Its name is derived from the name of the first community head - Bartło­miej Jonkowe. While performing his duties, Copernicus was here twice, settling newcomers. There is also the St. John the Baptist’s church in the village, built in the 14th century. It was rebuilt several times; currently, its interior contains elements of Gothic, renaissance and neo-Gothic architecture. The church tower was added in the 18th century. Inside, one may be interested in the wooden ceiling with baroque polychrome and the neo-Gothic high altar, made in the 19th century.
